South Side Pizza Shop Caught Hiding Health Alert

When two Allegheny County Health Department inspectors left the Pittzarella pizza shop on the South Side early last month, they slapped a bright yellow "Consumer Alert" sticker prominently on the front door warning patrons about unsanitary conditions in the kitchen.

But that wasn't the worst thing to happen for the East Carson Street eatery that day.

On the way back to the car, one of the inspectors noticed the alert decal had vanished. A check back revealed someone had used a flier to cover up the sticker on the outside, and a menu to block it from the inside.

The incident earned Pittzarella a $500 fine, which the county assessed last week.

"We consider it a serious offense" to conceal or remove an alert placard, said Donna Scharding, food safety program manager for the health department. "It's preventing the public from accessing pertinent information on the conditions inside the facility. …
