Don't like pumpkin soup that tastes like pumpkin pie? Neither do I, which is why I loved this recipe from Maria Rodale's new "Scratch" cookbook.

Shop for either "sugar pumpkins" or "pie pumpkins" and choose one free of punctures or soft areas with a good, solid stem. You can also substitute 2 cups canned pumpkin puree.

Serve with crusty bread and a salad for a light supper or with a grilled cheese sandwich for a hearty lunch.

SAVORY SPICED PUMPKIN SOUP

4 tablespoons ( stick) butter

1 white onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 teaspoon ground turmeric

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1 teaspoon curry powder

1 tablespoon chopped fresh Italian parsley leaves

2 pounds sugar pumpkin, peeled, seeded and chopped

2 cups vegetable or chicken stock

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

cup heavy cream or coconut milk, plus extra for serving

Salt and freshly ground black pepper
