Turn Clocks Back Tonight Also Check Batteries in Smoke Alarms

The Allegheny County Department of Emergency Services urges residents to add one more chore to their to-do lists in addition to setting the clock back an hour as daylight-saving time ends this weekend.

Remember to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors as you set the clocks back in anticipation of daylight-saving time's end at 2 a.m. Sunday, the department said.

"Daylight-saving time provides a perfect opportunity to increase awareness in the community about the lifesaving benefits of smoke alarms," county emergency services Chief Matt Brown said. "Smoke alarms can't do their jobs, however, if the batteries have died, so checking the batteries is just as important. Age matters as well when it comes to your smoke alarms, and the alarms should be replaced every 10 years, so check the manufacture date on yours today. …
