Sewickley Boys, Moon Girls Earn 1-0 Victories

All season long, Moon midfielder Emily Orr had fed forward and fellow junior Delaney Snyder on many scoring chances that led to Snyder's tally of 36 goals heading into Friday night in the WPIAL Class 3A girls championship at Highmark Stadium.

But with the clock winding down in a scoreless tie against Montour, Snyder found herself triple-teamed on the near sideline. She ripped a vicious crossing pass that Orr buried into the upper left-hand side of the goal past Montour goalie Maura Hickey with 4:45 left in the second half to give the No. 1-seeded Tigers a 1-0 victory against their Section 4 rival.

It was the third time the teams had played this season, and Moon won both regular-season meetings by scores of 2-1 and 2-0 over the No. 6 Spartans. Moon enters the PIAA tournament with an overall record of 21-1. Montour is 16-3-3.

Orr has been happy to assist Snyder on many of her goals, but she was just as pleased to be the recipient of Snyder's cross.

"I just saw Delaney take it to the end line like she always does, and she made a great [through ball] and it was an open shot to the net," Orr said. The goal was Orr's sixth of the season to go with 18 assists.

Snyder felt a sense of urgency as the second-half clock wound below 10 minutes, and then below five.

"I needed to do something because I saw [the dwindling time on] the clock," she said. "When I take a person on, I need to get the ball in the back of the net."

She was happy that Orr was able to get the goal.

"I knew Emily was coming and that she has my back, and I have hers. As I crossed it, I said 'Yes!' "

Snyder agreed with coach Bill Pfeifer that she was triple-teamed while racing into the corner before she fed Orr.

"Climbing over that [triple-team] obstacle is one of the biggest difficulties I've faced all year," she said. "You can't get around it; you have to get over it. …
