Fast Start a Golden Strategy Waynesburg Boy Earns Class 2a Title

Ben Bumgarner tried a different strategy against Zach Skolnekovich. The idea helped lead to a much different result.

Bumgarner was a PIAA champion.

Bumgarner, a senior at Waynesburg High School, won the PIAA Class 2A cross-county championship Saturday at the Parkview Cross Country Course in Hershey, Pa. He finished in 16 minutes, 1 second to beat Quaker Valley's Skolnekovich, who ran 16:13.

A week ago at the WPIAL championships, Skolnekovich won the title, beating Bumgarner by three seconds.

"Ben put his move on earlier in this race and that's when he started to pull away," Waynesburg coach Matt Branstetter said."He was just stronger today and kept improving on his lead. It was fun to watch."

Bumgarner was the only WPIAL individual - boy or girl - to win a title.

The WPIAL had three of the top four finishers in the race. …
