Mahwah Finishes 'Clean Sweep'

MAHWAH -- Police completed a 10-day "Clean Sweep Mahwah" over the weekend, resulting in more than 50 criminal arrests and 120 criminal complaints, authorities said.

Police Chief James N. Batelli said the action was intended to address quality-of-life issues in the township, along with resident complaints and anonymous tips.

Over the 10 days ending Saturday, Batelli said, Detective Sgt. Kevin Hebert led a team of patrol officers, investigators and a K-9 unit in conducting surveillances, vehicle stops and follow-up investigations.

Among the arrests were four for possession with intent to distribute illegal drugs, one for possession of a handgun and six for possession of stolen property, Batelli said. Three people were arrested on outstanding warrants, the chief added. …
