Police closed Route 4 in Englewood in both directions early Saturday afternoon as emergency responders investigated an item under the highway that was thought to be suspicious.

The highway was reopened at roughly 1:10 p.m. after authorities issued the all-clear.

Traffic was stopped for about an hour on the busy thoroughfare, which leads from the George Washington Bridge to Bergen County's iconic shopping malls and beyond.

At the same time, side streets in the area also became jammed with vehicles that had been detoured from the state highway.

Police blocked the highway to westbound traffic at Grand Avenue in Englewood and at Webster Avenue in Teaneck on the eastbound side.

Police from both of those communities, as well as the Bergen County Sheriff's Office, were involved in traffic control. …
