ENGLAND manager Gareth Southgate has defended Luke Shaw's decision to pull out of the United squad to play Swansea, despite criticism from Jose Mourinho.

Shaw and Chris Smalling were singled out by the United manager after 3-1 win at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday for refusing to play through the pain barrier.

Mourinho revealed Shaw had informed him on the morning of the game that he was not fit to play.

It forced the Portuguese coach to pick a makeshift back four of Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.

Shaw has started 10 of United's 18 games so far this season.

But Southgate, who has left the 21-year-old out of the England squad for games against Scotland and Spain, insists the left-back is still suffering the effects of the horrific leg break he suffered last season.

He said: "Chris hasn't played for quite a while and Luke has played but we've known he's had ongoing difficulties coming back from a very serious injury," he said. …
