Most people wouldn't celebrate their 100th birthday in a sports lounge. But when you can still sink a basketball shot, why not?

Martha Schiedel, who turned 100 in September, says her athletic skills aren't her secret to longevity. She attributes that to honesty, faith in Christ and a daily nap. But she admits remaining active might have something to do with it.

The former Martha Belle O'Dell was born in Chaffee, N.Y., on Sept. 21, 1916. During World War II, she served in the WAVES as a nurse at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. She graduated from Hurst's Private School and Bryant & Stratton Business Institute, both in Buffalo, N.Y., and worked as a secretary.
