Man, 21, Pleads Guilty in Northview Heights Killing

A Northview Heights man will go to prison for 12 to 30 years after pleading guilty Monday to killing another man last year at the housing complex.

Appearing before Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Philip A. Ignelzi, Joshua Johnson, 21, pleaded guilty to one count each of third-degree murder, robbery and conspiracy in connection with the Nov. 16 shooting death of Deron McCray, 23, of the Hill District.

Mr. McCray was killed inside a house in the 1400 block of Chicago Street.

A witness told police that Mr. McCray was inside the house with a legal firearm when he responded to a knock at the door with the gun loaded. The witness heard screaming and a struggle and found Mr. McCray lying on the landing from the kitchen to the basement steps.

Police reviewed video surveillance footage and identified Johnson as one of the people running from the home during the shooting, an affidavit said. …
