Injured players skate

Defenseman Jon Merrill and forward Luke Gazdic rejoined the Devils for Tuesday's morning skate, their first time on the ice with their teammates since both were placed on injured reserve Oct. 10.

"Those guys are in full practice mode now," coach John Hynes said. "Not game ready by any means."

Still, both have been cleared for contact drills.

Gazdic broke his left foot Sept. 26 and Merrill broke his right index finger Oct. 1. Both spent last week skating on their own with the Devils traveling.

"It was awesome just to be back with the boys," said Merrill, 24, who had a goal and four assists in 47 games last season, his third with the Devils. "It was a step in the right direction and hopefully we'll be in there quicker rather than later."

There is no timetable for either player to be activated.

"It feels great; what needs to come now is my lungs and my legs," said Gazdic, 27, who had a goal in 29 games for the Oilers last season.

The Devils have 22 players, including just six defensemen, on their roster, one shy of the NHL maximum. …
