Francis Howell School Tax Increase Fails While Affton School Propositions Pass

Voters passed a tax increase and bond issue for the Affton School District on Tuesday after going a dozen years without one.

Meanwhile, a tax increase for the Francis Howell School District failed by a narrow margin.

The two districts have said the tax increases are necessary to prevent cuts to instruction and student services in light of lower property tax revenue.

Affton residents passed the tax levy increase with nearly two- thirds of the vote, while they passed the bond issue with a strong majority.

Affton, in south St. Louis County, sought a 38-cent tax levy increase in addition to a 49-cent increase for a $25 million bond issue.

Francis Howell, in St. Charles County, asked voters for a 60- cent tax levy increase. Last year, Francis Howell also tried and failed to pass a tax levy increase.

District officials said they needed the increase to maintain the district's high academic performance. …
