The word "aviva" means "spring" or "renewal" in Hebrew, evokes the Latin root for "life," and is way easier to say than "Kobernick- Anchin-Benderson."

"That's part of the charm," says Heidi Brown, who remains at her old job but is now CEO of the rebranded "Aviva: A Campus for Senior Life."

This nonprofit community near The Meadows, which opened its doors as Kobernick Independent Living in 1993, has adopted a new name to reflect the many kinds of elder services that now take place on its grounds. And of course, there's also an updated website: AvivaSeniorLife.org.

Brown says the "fresh" name resulted from a great deal of soul searching, market research and community meetings.

"We recognized that we have been pioneers in providing senior living here in Sarasota, and we also know that we need to be innovative and progressive," she explains. "All the focus groups that we tested with our list of names chose 'Aviva.' It evoked a feeling like anything is possible at any age."

Sunnyside strikes gold, again

The Governor's Gold Seal award for nursing homes is hard to earn - - there are only 36 currently, out of 683 facilities in Florida -- and it's even harder to hang onto. The designation lasts for three years, and some excellent nursing homes in this region have been on and off the list.

The stringent criteria include a quality ranking in the top 10 percent statewide or top 15 percent regionally; a 5-star overall ranking in the state's Nursing Home Guide; no major deficiencies within 30 months; participation in a consumer satisfaction process; a stable workforce history; and an outstanding record with the State Long Term Care Ombudsman Council for 30 months. And the Agency for Health Care Administration, responsible for inspecting nursing homes in our state, is considered a particularly hard grader.

That's why it's a pretty big deal that Sunnyside Health and Rehabilitation Center in Sarasota just earned its seventh Gold Seal in a row. …
