Pennsylvanians are all the richer because of the addition of 184 acres of state parkland in Somerset County. The acquisition, made possible with the help of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and two foundations,represents an important expansion of the state's park system. It also gives Pittsburghers more reasons to visit the Laurel Highlands.

The property, adjoining the 4,062-acre Laurel Hill State Park, will be called Scenic View at Laurel Hill. The conservancy transferred the property to the state after purchasing it from Penn Scenic View Inc. for $1 million. The conservancy raised the money through state aid and assistance from the Colcom and Richard King Mellon foundations. Jane Menchyk, a land protection manager with the conservancy, said Penn Scenic View, affiliated with the William Penn Association, sold the property at a reduced price because of the intended public use. …
