STATE REPRESENTATIVE DISTRICTS 70, 73, 74

Two newcomers and one incumbent notched overwhelming victories in races for three state House districts representing parts of Sarasota and Manatee counties on Tuesday night.

Republican Joe Gruters easily defeated Democrat James Golden to win the House 73 seat representing eastern portions of both counties.

The Sarasota GOP chairman and a leader of Donald Trump's Florida campaign won a bruising primary against a tea party challenger by fewer than 400 votes, but sailed past the former Bradenton city councilman.

Democrat Wengay Newton also easily defeated Republican Cori Fournier to win the House 70 seat that is centered in St. Petersburg but represents parts of four counties, including a corridor stretching south through Bradenton and into north Sarasota. …
