STATE REPRESENTATIVE DISTRICT 72

A state House race upended by the revelation that Democrat Edward James III had been accused of sexual assault ended with Republican Alex Miller easily winning election Tuesday.

Miller will replace outgoing Republican state Rep. Ray Pilon in the District 72 state House seat, which includes most of northern Sarasota County.

"I feel so blessed, so honored, so humble," Miller said Tuesday.

The CEO of her family's medical supply company, Miller pitched herself as a moderate "consensus builder." She was helped by a flood of attack pieces from the Republican Party of Florida highlighting the sexual assault allegation against James.

The District 72 race had been considered one of the more competitive legislative contests in the state until the accusation against James became public last month.

James, a 26-year-old former Google employee and Sarasota native, drew notice for his speaking skills and fundraising prowess. He raised $401,548 between his campaign account and an affiliated committee, a huge sum for a House race. …
