HOSPITAL BOARD

Three incumbent members of the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board, all Republicans, managed to retain their seats in a race that has seen an unusual number of challengers and upsets. Two other board openings also went to Republican candidates -- nurses who were seeking office for the first time.

Two current board members, Marguerite Malone and John DeJongh, were defeated by challengers in the August Republican primary. Both newcomers triumphed in what appears to have been a consistent party- line vote.

Retired nursing educator Sharon Wetzler DePeters won against her Democratic opponent, Kevin T. Connelly, and will take over the seat now held by DeJongh. And registered nurse Susan Tucker defeated Democrat Cheryl Brandi for Malone's seat. …
