I am grieving for my country. I am ashamed of my country. But what is really bothering me is that my lovely, snarky, independent daughter is afraid. She is a junior in college, not yet 21. She texted me election night and said, "Mom, I'm afraid." Then at 1:53 a.m.: "This is terrible. What is wrong with this country?" The day after, I received texts from her and her friends saying they were all afraid.

My daughter has friends across the color spectrum and the sexual identity spectrum. What they saw was that a smarmy, racist, sexist, white man who also has no respect for the disabled, POWs and others (including a Gold Star family) was considered eligible for the highest office in the land, and half the voters in the United States agreed. …
