To my future children: I was only 18 on Nov. 8, 2016. I voted against hate, bigotry, misogyny, fear and many other things. I encouraged my friends to get out and vote. I was confident that our country would choose the right path - one of hope and unity, not despair and division. As the polls began to close, I began to feel ill. I began to feel ill for all of my friends who were Muslim, who were LGBT, who were immigrants, who have disabilities, who were of a different race, who were female or who were going to need jobs - and for the whole human race.?

I thought, as a country, we were beyond hate, fear, division and divisive rhetoric, but apparently I was wrong. I want you to know that many Americans tried to stop this. We were warned by news anchors, comedians, politicians, pundits, friends and neighbors. …
