UNICEF Teams Up with Writers for Children's Rights

UNITED NATIONS * The United Nations Children's Fund has teamed up with more than 200 prominent writers from around the globe to commemorate Universal Children's Day.

U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq said Monday that novelists, playwrights and poets had contributed tiny stories of about seven lines each for the campaign ahead of UNICEF's 70th anniversary on Dec. 11.

Nigeria's Chimamanda Adichie, Brazil's Paulo Coelho and Britain's Christina Lamb were among the authors who contributed stories.

The weeklong campaign, which was conceptualized by Finnish first lady Jenni Haukio, ends on Sunday the anniversary of the adoption of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child.

"As writers we are able to advocate through the simplicity of storytelling," Adichie said. …
