POLICE REPORT

SARASOTA -- Antonio Giacindo said quick work by Sarasota police and firefighters saved businesses at the corner of Main Street and U.S. 301 from a much bigger disaster Sunday morning.

An SUV-style truck traveling on U.S. 301, also known as Washington Boulevard, at about 5:30 a.m. drove onto the sidewalk, plowed through a patio area where a man was setting up tables, and struck the building near Bravo Pizza & Italian Eatery, one door east of Regal Hollywood Stadium 20.

"He made it into a pancake," Bravo Pizza owner Antonio Giacindo said.

The impact knocked out a gas meter, and the truck ran over tables set out from a party the night before.

Police arrested the driver, who sat shirtless in his truck.

Giacindo says the crash may be alcohol-related. …
