Washburn Rural Soccer Rolls into Semis with 4-0 Win over Topeka High

Article excerpt

If defense wins championships, the Washburn Rural soccer team must like its chances.

Fueled by their stout defense, the Junior Blues beat Topeka High 4-0 on Tuesday at Rural to advance to the Class 6A semifinal. Rural is now one win away from playing for the state title.

The Junior Blues (17-2-0), who have held opponents scoreless in 13 of their 19 games, came out from the get-go and pressured the ball.

"We wanted to put all of the pressure on them (Topeka High) early in the game," Rural coach Brain Hensyl said. "It was a hot night and we have a lot of depth, and we were hoping to wear them down."

The high press applied by the Rural defense eventually paid dividends as Rural's Claire Meyers made the most of a Trojan turnover with a blast into the upper right corner of the net to give the Junior Blues the only goal they needed with 19:18 left in the first half.

Rural added to its lead with 13:10 in the half when Darby Hirsch converted from the penalty spot after a Topeka High foul in the box.

"We were pretty confident if we could get two or three goals that things were going to go our way tonight, "Hensyl said.

After the break, the Junior Blues tacked onto their lead as Avery Munns scored from the top of the box with 29:34 left.

The final Rural goal came with 2:37 left as Madison Gordon headed home an Abby Glynn cross.

Kelly Lemke was awarded the shutout.

The Trojans, who were in the midst of the most successful season in program history, finished the year by advancing farther than any team previously in program history.

"I'm so proud of them," Trojan coach Jerimiah Lavelle said. "They worked so hard, and it's tough to go out like this. I'd rather us go out to a great team like Washburn Rural."

The Trojans, who are only losing three seniors, will return a majority of their team, and Lavelle is looking forward to next season. …
