Vikings Rule in Title Game ; Seaman Clubs Pair of Homers to Edge Heights

WICHITA -- The liberal allowance of substitutions and position changes permitted in softball prompted Seaman to do everything possible to keep the dangerous Shawnee Heights lineup off-balance.

The Vikings started Hailey Reed but alternated her twice with another senior pitcher, Erin Boyd.

Together they scattered six hits as Seaman capitalized on home runs by Lauren Mills and Rylee Neigenfind to edge Shawnee Heights 3- 2 Saturday in the championship game of the Class 5A tournament at Two Rivers Youth Complex.

"We wanted to position ourselves to win the tournament,'' Seaman coach Jay Monhollon said. "Great pitching stops great hitting.

"Heights is a great hitting team and we told our kids we were going to utilize everybody's gifts, talents and ability and give it everything we've got. Once again, even though Hailey is our ace, our No. 1, Erin Boyd is just as solid. Both of them are just amazing, unselfish young kids.''

Reed pitched the first, second, fifth and sixth innings. Boyd came on to throw in the third and fourth, before closing out the win in the seventh.

Seaman used power to back up those arms. Mills, a sophomore clean- up hitter, slugged her seventh homer of the season to drive in Reed with two outs in the first.

Mills was walked her next two times up, but Neigenfind got a pitch to drive leading off the sixth. Her solo shot provided the final margin after Heights tied the game 2-2 in the fifth.

"My first two at-bats I wasn't getting solid contact,'' said Neigenfind, one of 10 seniors on the Vikes' roster. "The third time I told myself this one is going to be better. I hit the ball solid and I was just hoping the outfielder wasn't going to catch it.''

Heights' rally began with back-to-back doubles by Natalie Crimmins and Paylin Reynolds before Faith Rottinghaus added a run- scoring single off Reed, a Division I signee with Pacific. …
