Nitro Pays Homage to Veterans ; Flag-Lowering Ceremony Held at Sunset

The moon was nearly full as it rose over the flags at Nitro's Veterans Memorial. During a Nov. 10 sunset flag-lowering ceremony marking Veterans Day, guest speakers described Nitro's founding during World War I as a town dedicated to the war effort.

"Because the federal government founded Nitro as a manufacturing center for ammunition in World War I, our community always has had a strong connection to our veterans, said Nitro Mayor Dave Casebolt.

Nitro is preparing for its centennial year in 2017, and the flag- lowering ceremony was billed as an early start to next year's events.

The Nov. 10 ceremony included the placing of a wreath and lowering of flags, with patriotic music from the Nitro High Schol band. Veterans groups participating included Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3466, American Legion Post 94 and the Herbert J. …
