Questions were again raised at the Nov. 9 Woodland Hills School Board meeting over why some retired district teachers continue to receive health-care benefits despite being eligible to receive Medicare.

In the spring, the district revised language in the teachers' contract to stop health-care payments to future retirees.

But what has not been settled is what to do with current retirees who are eligible for Medicare, but are still in the seven-year period where they are receiving health-care benefits from Woodland Hills.

"This is an extensive issue," said Bill Tomasic, a retired teacher from another district who brought the matter to the board's attention this year.

"Someone fumbled the ball," said Mr. Tomasic, a member of Forest Hills Borough Council. "None of this makes sense."

The district has said it will continue to pay the benefits. But it hired the law firm of Campbell, Durant, Beatty, Palombo & Miller on Sept. 21 at a cost not to exceed $10,000 to investigate the matter. …
