CASE 14 * The 65-year-old grandmother took on perhaps the most her battered house can hold: eight children. She adopted a niece and nephew and is taking care of others from her extended family who need a warm place to stay. S is the youngest. She's 2, wears size 5 shoes and dreams about purple pants. It's hard to provide what she and the other children need, let alone want for Christmas.

CASE 15 * Ms. S's 5-year-old son suffers from a rare seizure disorder that affects his ability to see, talk, move or breathe. He eats through a tube in his stomach and breathes with an oxygen tank. Ms. S lives with her sister and mother along with three other boys in their family under 14. They have health insurance coverage for the child's medical needs but are struggling with rent and utilities in a new apartment. …
