U.S. Secretary of Education Visits Piedmont, Pinch Elementaries

U.S. Education Secretary John B. King Jr. came to a pair of area elementary schools recently, during a busy morning visit to the Kanawha Valley. King paid calls on Piedmont Elementary on Charleston's East End and Pinch Elementary School on Oct. 20, touring the schools and meeting with faculty and students.

After an 8:30 a.m. stop at Piedmont, where he read the story "Prince of a Frog to Ashley Switzer's prekindergarten students, King participated in a public "town hall discussion at the state Capitol Complex. Joined by West Virginia Schools Superintendent Michael Martirano and other education officials, the Cabinet secretary addressed the role of early learning in the federal education law passed last December by President Obama, Every Students Succeeds Act, at the roundtable event.

According to a U.S. Education Department media release, the ESSA, for the first time, includes provisions to promote coordination in early learning among local communities. …
