Man Charged with Directing Epithets at Supposed Muslim the Victim May Have Been of Indian Descent

A Bethel Park man has been arrested on charges that he hurled slurs at a man he believed to be a Muslim and then assaulted him.

Bethel Park police said Jeffrey Burgess, 54, was sitting next to the victim at a bar inside the Red Robin restaurant at South Hills Village mall Tuesday night.

The victim was using earphones when Mr. Burgess began using ethnic slurs that have been associated with Muslims, police Chief Tim O'Connor said. Then, police said, Mr. Burgess "without any provocation" elbowed the victim in the head, grabbed him and punched him.

It's unclear whether the man is Muslim. Police said they think he is of Indian descent.

The victim was treated at a hospital Tuesday and released, police said.

Mr. Burgess, who appeared to be drunk, was taken to the Allegheny County Jail. Mr. Burgess remained in jail in lieu of $5,000 bail Wednesday. …
