Beaver Falls Coach Is Thrilled with Week Off

Article excerpt

For the first time since the PIAA playoffs started in 1988, a WPIAL champion will have a week off before starting the state playoffs.

Thank goodness, says Beaver Falls coach Ryan Matsook.

Beaver Falls won the WPIAL Class 3A title Friday, the first title for the Tigers in 32 years. But under a new WPIAL playoff system this season, the 3A champion has a week off before starting the PIAA playoffs Dec. 2-3. Beaver Falls is the only WPIAL champion that will not play this weekend.

A week off will change a team's routine or it might take away momentum from a Beaver Falls team that has won 11 in a row since a season-opening loss. Nonsense, says Matsook. He loves the idea of a week off, and it has nothing to do with healing injuries.

"It's more a mindset thing than anything," said Matsook. "There's the old adage of the Heinz Field hangover after the WPIAL championship. I think we might be a victim of that. Having to turn around and play a game Friday and Saturday would be really difficult for these kids. They're being pulled in every direction. There is an assembly at school [today]. On Friday, they'll be a holiday parade in town.

"What we accomplished is great, but it's beneficial to have this week off. They worked Monday at practice, but they're still floating from the championship."

Beaver Falls will play the winner of Karns City and Martinsburg Central. Karns City won a PIAA sub-regional game Saturday against Hickory, which was ranked No. 1 in the state in 3A.

"We haven't won a WPIAL in so long, and people are excited," said Matsook. "It's a case where it would be nice to let the kids enjoy it. Hopefully, by the time next weekend rolls around, they'll be chomping to play."

The two WPIAL championships Saturday at Joe Walton Stadium at Robert Morris will not be on television. But you can still watch the games as long as you can get on the internet.

The MSA Sports network will live stream both title games on video at www. …
