Man Admits to Robbing Elderly Woman outside Kanawha City Mall

A man pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery on Monday and admitted to taking a 78-year-old woman's purse at knifepoint outside a Kanawha City store. Clifton Martin, 24, of Charleston, said he and his cousin took turns standing outside the Shops at Kanawha on March 16, waiting for the chance to rob someone of her purse. At about 6 p.m., Martin admitted that he stopped Louise Babst, 78, as she approached the entrance of the Elder Beerman store.

Martin showed the woman a knife and said "let me have this," police wrote in a complaint charging Martin and his cousin, James Rodgers, 25, of Charleston, with conspiracy, first-degree robbery and fraudulent use of an access device. Babst gave Martin her purse and was not injured, police previously said.

Martin then ran to the parking lot and got in his grandfather's red Ford Ranger pickup truck, which was driven by Rodgers, according to police. …
