Westcoast Troupe Puts Holiday Spirit into 'Nativity'

Nate Jacobs always tries to find new things to add or alter when he stages the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe's frequent holiday tradition of "Black Nativity." Though he has produced and directed it several times since starting the troupe, each version has been a little different depending on who is involved.

But that's how it's been since "Black Nativity" was created by poet and playwright Langston Hughes in 1961. It tells the story of the Nativity mixed with gospel, blues and traditional spirituals and contemporary Christmas favorites.

The script has become something of a framework around which directors build their own versions.

Jacobs, who last directed the show two years ago, calls it "our "Christmas card of the season." He said "Black Nativity" provides joy and inspiration "while staying true to our mission of promoting and celebrating the African-American experience. …
