In light of the property reassessment throughout Washington County - the first since the early 1980s - Peters is proposing a revenue-neutral tax rate of 1.522 mills for 2017.

Township manager Paul Lauer explained that the property tax rate had to be adjusted from the 13 mills it has been for the last five years because state law prohibits governing bodies from reaping a tax windfall of more than 10 percent during reassessment years.

"Collectively, residents will be paying less taxes" with the adjusted millage, Mr. Lauer said. Individuals, however, could end up paying more or less than they did previously, he said.

"We wanted to set the rate at a number that will generate what we would have expected under the prior system," Mr. Lauer said at council's meeting Monday, where members discussed the proposed $12. …
