CASE 50 * Job layoffs, condemned housing and flooding have kept B and her six children in off-and-on homelessness for two years. B also lives under the threat of domestic violence from her older children's father. She was recently diagnosed with cancer and needs to have surgery soon. It has been three years since the family has had a gift to open on Christmas Day.

CASE 51 * K, 42, suffers from advanced lung disease, and her husband has had four stents inserted into heart arteries. He may need more surgery. Neither can work, and K is awaiting word on her application for disability benefits. They have two children. They receive food stamps and help from relatives, but their rent is $464 a month.
