SARASOTA -- Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota's world- class conservation and research center, and New College of Florida hope to empower a new generation of scientists with a collaborative effort announced Monday.

The details, finalized last month, will offer international internships for students and faculty to work with each institution. The move establishes a formal resource-sharing pipeline between Selby, whose researchers have studied more than 2,000 previously unknown plant species, and Florida's honors college. The partnership could accelerate Selby's exposure and attract additional funding.

In addition, Selby Gardens announced the establishment of a $25,000 Calusa Prize to be awarded each year to students chasing New College degrees in botany or horticulture, public garden management, research, collection management, and cataloging flora via art and photography. …
