Anticoagulant Exposure Sickens Two Students

Two second-graders at Imagine Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship were taken to a hospital Wednesday as a precaution when one brought a test tube with anticoagulant to school and opened it in class, authorities said.

Penn Hills EMS supervisor Diane Fitzhenry said the girl had blood work done at a clinical lab over the weekend, and her mother told officials her daughter was given the test tube as a "souvenir" of sorts. Penn Hills police Chief Howard Burton said the 6-year-old girl took the vial to school, popped the top, and, along with a classmate, stuck pencils in the anticoagulant at the bottom and smelled the substance, which caused nausea.

"They thought it glistened, and they were trying to use it as lip gloss," Ms. Fitzhenry said. …
