1520 Martin Luther publicly burned the papal edict threatening him with excommunication.

1851 The Pennsylvania Railroad formally began business in the city of Pittsburgh with its rail line extended as far as Turtle Creek. At that point, passengers transferred to stagecoach, which bridged a 28-mile gap in the rail connection.

1906 President Theodore Roosevelt became the first American to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for helping to mediate an end to the Russo-Japanese War.
