1870 Joseph H. Rainey of South Carolina became the first black lawmaker sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives.

1900 At a testimonial dinner for him in New York, Charles M. Schwab, president of the Carnegie Company, made a speech that impressed one of the guests, J.P. Morgan, and led later to organization of the United States Steel Corp., the greatest steel corporation in the world.

1954 John C. Warner, Carnegie Tech president, was named national president of the American Chemical Society for the year 1956. He was the second Pittsburgher to be so honored; the first was E.R. Weidlein, director of the Mellon Institute, in 1937.

1985 Two hundred forty-eight American soldiers and eight crew members were killed when an Arrow Air charter crashed after takeoff from Gander, Newfoundland.
