Gender Equity Is the First of Many Rights We Must Defend Locally

A big thank you to the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom for spearheading the effort to make Pittsburgh a city for CEDAW ("Council Approves Measure to Fight Gender Bias," Dec. 7) and to the many organizations that joined in this project. Our work is only beginning, but it's an important first step.

In December, we mark the International Day of Human Rights. We need to understand that Pittsburgh City Council's approval of CEDAW (the Convention for the Elimination of all Discrimination Against Women) is only the first of many rights we might need to defend locally rather than expecting the U.S. government to act on our behalf.

Let me explain. CEDAW is a U.N. resolution, signed by all but six countries (the United States, Iran, Somalia, Sudan and two Pacific islands). …
