I was pleased to read the PG editorial regarding treatment of pregnant inmates at Allegheny County Jail ("Expecting, Behind Bars,"Dec. 6). It was depressing to note, however, that the same problems exist that personally affected our family more than five years ago.

Our daughter spent six months of her pregnancy in ACJ awaiting trial on misdemeanor charges, related to a mental illness, like 81 percent of the jail population. When she went into labor, she was taken in shackles to Magee-Womens Hospital and handcuffed to the delivery room table. (Where did they think she was going to go?) We weren't notified until four hours after the baby was born. She had no support in labor.

She was returned to jail within 48 hours and left alone in a cell with no baby and no pain relief. …
