For a shelter puppy hailing from Naples and originally named 'Freckles,' the Manatee County Sheriff's Office computer canine, Gia, has come a long way.

This week, she's the recipient of one of People Magazine's annual pet awards, spotlighting "the most heroic, hilarious and all-around paw-some pets," according to a post on the magazine's website from May 2014.

Gia is assigned to the Child Protection Investigation Division and works with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, according to her secondary handler, Detective Jaime Rivera. Her job is to conduct a secondary search in a residence for technological devices that may have child pornography on them. She's trained to sniff out circuit boards that are often found in thumb drives and hard drives. …
