Extra Help Pivotal after Baby's Birth

MANATEE COUNTY -- Christian-Aleczander is so quick to smile, you'd never guess he's anything but healthy. But the 4-month-old underwent surgery Sunday at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He was born with several holes in his heart.

"I cry all the time because my baby is supposed to be perfect, but he's not and it shatters me," said his mother, Marylola Turquiz, 21.

This was Turquiz's second pregnancy. Her first ended in a miscarriage at 11 weeks. She was on bed rest this time for the entire pregnancy and was unable to work. Her husband, Manuel Turquiz, took on the couple's expenses alone. When their baby was born and had to stay an additional two weeks in the hospital, Manuel, 20, did something he never has the luxury of doing: he took off time from work.

The Turquiz's received Season of Sharing funds through Healthy Start, a nonprofit dedicated to infant and maternal health. The money helped the couple pay their rent the month their baby was born. …
