Hechler to Lie in Repose at Culture Center

Funeral services for Ken Hechler, a former Congressman and secretary of state, have been announced. In Charleston, a memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the state Culture Center. Hechler will lie in repose in the Culture Center prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

In Hampshire County, a visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Giffin Funeral Home, in Capon Bridge. Hechler's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at Augusta Church of Christ, in Augusta.

Hechler died at his Hampshire County home late Saturday at the age of 102.

Born in Roslyn, New York, in 1914, he was a graduate of Swarthmore College and later Columbia University, where he earned both a master's degree and a Ph.D. in political science.

Hechler was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 just after the U.S. entered World War II. He trained as an infantryman and tank commander, but eventually was assigned as an Army combat historian in the European Theater and rose the rank of colonel. …
