SARASOTA -- Sarasota Military Academy students were notified Wednesday morning that the school's commandant and chief financial officer, Brig. Gen. Frank Laudano, was "in grave condition" and likely would not return after suffering a heart attack last weekend.

Laudano was taken to Doctors Hospital Saturday morning after the heart attack, according to SMA board member Col. Ben Knisely. At the announcement Wednesday, students sang the national anthem and did their normal formation before SMA's board chairman, Lt. Gen. Howard G. Crowell "gave a very emotional talk," Knisely said.

"It was very sad," he said. "There were almost a thousand people crying."

Laudano has been with the school since April 2011, according to his LinkedIn page, but he showed a passion for education long before. …
