Sarasota Employees Approve Contract | Overwhelming Support for Deal That Gives Raises

SARASOTA -- School district employees voted overwhelmingly this week to accept a new union contract that will provide what amounts to a 4 percent salary increase for the 2016-17 year.

"This may be my highest (approval percentage) ever," said Barry Dubin, executive director of the Sarasota Classified Teachers Association. "We're trying to make everybody whole again."

County school teachers voted 1,778-25 in favor, a 99 percent approval rate. Classified employees approved the contract, 1,350- 49, a 96 percent mandate.

The deal brought grandfathered classified employees up to the pay levels, or steps, they were on track to receive before the recession began to derail the schedule in 2008-09. Teachers still lag one step behind, but Dubin anticipates getting them back on track during bargaining next year. …
