The City School Board Was Right to Reject This Tif for the Strip

As the parent of a Pittsburgh Public Schools student, I applaud the school board for rejecting a "tax increment financing" plan for the Strip District ("Tax Incentive Deals Meet Resistance With Pittsburgh School Board," Dec. 15).

Property taxes for public schools should not be diverted to high-end developments with no affordable housing, in neighborhoods where developers are already competing to invest. Should $7.5 million in school taxes be used for sidewalks in the Strip District? Or for community schools, early childhood programs and reducing suspensions? It is deplorable that city and county leaders think this is a good use of public funds and that they would try to railroad the school board into rubber- stamping this bad proposal.

A decade ago Pittsburgh leaders eagerly signed up for "interest-rate swaps," and we're still paying for their mistakes. …
