Patriarch of Giovanni's on the Hill Restaurant Charged with Molesting Woman

ST. LOUIS * Giovanni Gabriele, founder of the well-known Giovanni's on the Hill restaurant, has been charged with several crimes after a woman told police he molested her at the business.

Gabriele, 75, of the 14000 block of Forest Crest Drive, was charged Thursday with first-degree sodomy, second-degree sexual abuse and third-degree assault in the name Gabriele Giovanni. He surrendered that day and posted $30,000 bail, according to his attorney, Neil Bruntrager.

"We have cooperated with law enforcement and we are surprised that these charges have been filed," Bruntrager said. "And we intend to defend vigorously the innocence of my client."

A woman told police that on July 6 she went to the restaurant, at 5201 Shaw Avenue, as a security system representative. Gabriele restrained her to a chair with force, moved his hands up her dress toward her upper inner thighs and told her he wanted to perform an act of sodomy on her, according to accusations in court documents. …
