1803 About 828,000 square miles of French territory was formally ceded to the United States. The U.S. paid about $15 million in the Louisiana Purchase.

1849 A two-hour speech at the Allegheny Market House by Salmon P. Chase, Ohio Free-Soil senator who went on to become a chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, set the trend of abolitionist thinking in Pittsburgh.
