Utah Is Fastest Growing State, Missouri Sees Slight Bump and Illinois Loses the Most People

Utah is the fastest-growing state in the country, crossing 3 million in population.

Meanwhile, Missouri saw a slight bump in population, while Illinois lost more residents than any other state.

Those are among the findings of annual population estimates released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

"States in the South and West continued to lead in population growth," said Ben Bolender, chief of the bureau's population estimates branch.

"In 2016, 37.9 percent of the nation's population lived in the South and 23.7 percent lived in the West."

Overall, the U.S. population grew by 0.7 percent in the past year, to 323.1 million.

The states with the largest populations are, in order: California; Texas; Florida; New York; Illinois; Pennsylvania; Ohio; Georgia; North Carolina; and Michigan. And while Illinois comes in at fifth, its population dropped by 37,508 people. …
