THIS DAY IN 1959

CHIMPANZEE KIDNAPPED

The man who trained a chimpanzee named Mr. Moke to say several words sneaks into the Ape House at the St. Louis Zoo, breaks the lock on the chimp's cage and kidnaps him. The man, Robert Tomarchin, leaves $1,000 and a note saying Mr. Moke was "heartbroken for freedom."
