Former Ferguson Jail Guard Gets Four Years in Prison for Allowing Inmate Escape

FERGUSON * A former correctional officer at the jail here was sentenced Tuesday to four years in prison for allowing an inmate to escape in 2013.

Jaris Hayden, then 31, pleaded guilty Oct. 7 to two felony charges: being a public servant acceding to corruption and permitting an escape.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Ashley Bailey-Smith recommended four years in prison.

There was no substantive discussion in the sentencing hearing in St. Louis County Circuit Court on Tuesday about the crimes. Hayden's lawyer made no recommendation in court, and Hayden did not speak.

He was indicted in November 2014, and those charges originally also accused him of having sex with an inmate on Oct. 9, 2013, in exchange for allowing her to escape. The two sex charges were dropped at his plea, and he made no admission at the plea that he had sexual contact with the inmate, his lawyer said at the time. …
